The Plan : In the midst of a quest

• The Plan : In the midst of a quest

Where once there was no opportunity a quest has opened up with a plan set before you! A foundation will create a concrete ground to stabilize your fearlessness to say YES! During this time you are Networking, Marketing and Practicing your heart out. The passion is growing, but nothing seems to be happening. It will not happen right now while you are building up your foundation. Your job right now is to do little to nothing with your dream. That is correct, you are not ready to do anything with your dream: be it buy a house, be an actor, tell some jokes, or even start investing. This time is dedicated to your 3 Needs of Success. What else could you be doing to keep your motivation up? Research, Research, Research, and learn every aspect of the field you want to be involved in.

From those who mastered your field to the little start companies within your interest of passion. The truth hides in their effort. Questions like “How did they get there” and “What were they doing to make this happen” are all powerful starting points. Know who you are going to be involved with. You may not be directly involved with them, but working in the same business as they do, or somehow you might be associated with them through a long line of degrees leading to one day crossing their paths, or even places and people they may have been in contact with. Know what and who people are. Educate yourself with a plethora of knowledge to store up correct tools to be prepared in any networking situation.

As you learn who these people are, begin your reach out program. Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals to organize your time properly. Start by sending one email out a day to introduce yourself to these people. Utilize the 3 paragraph formula that we will go over in the next few weeks. For now, start setting time aside to contact people. Another action should be getting post cards to send out to get your brand in their hands. Post cards are also a great way to say thank you to someone after a meeting, or a run in. Or even a great phone conversation. Build those relationships, and start making the correct steps to get your brand in their heads while learning who these people are and what they do. Never run into a desert without enough water, and know where that desert will lead you!

The Plan : What to do while I save

• The Plan : What to do while I save

Once you have figured out your foundation goal number to save for security then you must understand your needs to ensure a strong foundation period. During this time you must utilize your limited freedom to help build your networking circles while growing your brand value. Success comes from your 3 Needs of Success: Network, Market, and Practice. Building and cultivating relationships is all about who you know. Your brand value is important for people to remember who you are and what you do thus it creates a sense of who knows you. Once you have realized your personal value and time you will be involved in the 3 Needs of Success. During your time saving up a strong security to enforce your foundation take a time to master the art of Networking, Marketing and Practicing.

A few rules on how Networking can work for you during this time: Start going out to events when you have time. Learn about people, reach out to people and continue to interact with them over the course of your foundation growth. It is important to maintain a connection with individuals because it will give you a much larger head start when you officially leave your foundation growth and jump into your first year of success. Listen and respond to those around you, in your field of interest, and others surrounding the life you wish to be involved in. This is the time to get out there so you can be remembered, and earn friendships. A simple rule of thumb to remember about Networking: It is never about you. It is always about them.

Marketing is easier as a habit. During this time you want to grow your social network and awareness to your brand. While growing your numbers on social networks you must also maintain a continuous path to your main website. Having a site is a perfect way to get people to know where to find you with ease. I have been asked about “But I have nothing to sell, what would I need to do this for now?” You do have something to sell: Your Brand. It is an indicator of who and what you stand for. Anything you would traditionally sell is considered a By-Product. That comes later. Also, while building your social sites it is important to interact with those connected with you. Always conversational, never sell to them. Allow Marketing and Networking to work as a team through Practicing how to master it all.

The Plan : Where to begin, how to get there

• The Plan : Where to begin, how to get there

Planning begins your adventure forward, knowing where you are going sets up your direction to plan. Write down on a piece of paper ten things you would like to accomplish in your life. Now look through them and which five stand out as most important to you? Once you have marked those down place a star next to the one direct accomplishment which would change your life the most and give you the greatest satisfaction. Begin there. This is your Northern Star of your life. What we will be going over is how to get there. There is a plan, a strategy for every situation, that is similar in appearance yet will change your each person’s world differently. Take your important accomplishment and place it on the top of its own piece of paper. Then relax a while, because your journey has already begun.

Once you have comeback to your accomplishment written on a piece of paper we must remember one thing: There is a need of purpose involved. A budget of sorts that will define you and your life goals. Each action we set out needs finance. That finance could be your time and/or money. It is there though. We are in the stage of creating a foundation so you may say YES to your life. Your budget begins with understanding two main focuses: 1) Your personal budget. This budget is the amount of money it will cost you to live each month for eighteen months at a minimal, yet comfortable, state. 2) Your Accomplishment/Dream/Goal budget. This is the budgeted needed to support your venture for eighteen months. Once you have this number calculated you can now say YES to your life.

How do we say YES to your life? You must give yourself freedom to leave your job and take step into your purpose. Bring thoughts to life by creating actionable motion. A job holds us back, it creates a fear inside us. With your foundation created it will support your actions while you continue to make things happen. You have now freed up time from a job working eight hours a day to giving you time to work eight hours a day on a venture you truly believe in. This is where you must always start, the budget of your foundation. While creating a foundation there are many tasks needed to be accomplished. While working a job, or two, to gather the correct amount of foundation money, maintain habit building in areas of your Needs.

What are your needs? More to come…

Education : Class Act

Today’s Tip • Education : Class Act

To be the best one must practice their skill over and over again. Even the greats continue to practice through continuing their education. There are many classes out their to help further education in any field a person desires. For an actor, find a good acting class where you feel comfortable being involved in. Even owning a business, or living your life as a business, there are classes out there to help develop your mind in these fields. Being smart begins with saying yes to education. The rest is filling up your brain with knowledge.

Even successful people continue to take classes in their respected fields. They are successful because they wish to continue practicing simply to better themselves by keeping up with their craft / mind. This also includes seminars, or other educational programs. Yes, some of them will cost you money, as others will be free. The old saying is, “you get what you pay for.” This also works against a person’s mind. If they pay nothing, they feel they are getting nothing. When they pay for something they take it more seriously. That’s why seminars are vague and get you thinking.

A seminar is designed to have your brain start working without giving you defining objectives. The best seminars have you leave with new ideas, concepts and possibilities. Seminars will always lead you to a class. Which is good, you should be taking classes to help better your skill. Work hard, study hard, and become the hardest working person in your field to become the most successful working person in your field. Live your life everyday. It is your life, why live it and educate it, because you deserve to be a perfect Class Act of knowledge.

Inside, outside, maybe somewhere today?

Today’s Tip • Inside, outside, maybe somewhere today?

As a performer, standing outside while others perform is a sign of disrespect. To that venue, performers and any promoters. The cliché always seems to work itself into a reality; A performer shows up a few moments before they perform, jump on stage, gets off stage and either leaves for the night or hangs around outside while the show goes on. This scenario is a common occurrence in entertainment. These same people who behave like this also get upset when others do the same thing to them while they are performing.

The fix; watch the whole show, arrive early enough so you can meet other performers and “network”. Most importantly, each venue or promoter may have things to go over with you. Like, set time, pay or no pay, what’s going on, etc. How amazing you may or may not be on stage is canceled out by your respect factor before and after that show happens. Having a bad set, but being supportive is more powerful than having an amazing set and being disrespectful. It gets you less work.

Work with people and it will help you get further than you are today. It isn’t a race. This world of entertainment is looking for the right people. That is determined by your professionalism. Where you stand is more than a metaphor for inside and out of venue, it is about where you stand in the world of professionalism. Take other people serious and they will do the same in kind. Think of your performance as a job, if you are late you could possibly be written up or fired. Give yourself that respect to run your business properly.

Band Together : Fire Code at clubs

Today’s Tip • Band Together : Fire Code at clubs

Respect fire codes. Ignoring fire codes or people in charge of telling you to be aware of fire code does two things; Makes it so they won’t ever work with you again, and also gets people very angry. When it comes to saving lives at a venue, a person’s attitude against “a request” to not block that particular fire exits is moot. Any respectable owner will firstly be as nice as possible, then after that, it is pretty normally to see that owner be completely mean when telling a person more than once. When it comes to saving lives being nice only works for so long.

Read any story about people losing their lives because of fire codes being ignored. I promise you, it is never a happy ending. There is no adjusted reasoning to this rule. Leave the fire exits open, leave room for people to get out. No chance for any mess ups when it comes to lives. There is a right and wrong, and when you are in a place respect that you are always wrong when it comes to what that venue wants in-terms of keeping people safe.

We own “The Rose Theater”, and we have two rules; A) People’s lives come first, B) Respect the venue. We are some of the kindest people in the business. We know the heartache and pain that goes into performing, and making something from nothing into a beautiful expression of art! However, break those two rules and we would rather you not be in the venue. If you destroy it, then you take it away from others. We are here for life first.

Band Together : Stage Sound;

Today’s Tip • Band Together : Stage Sound;

“They go up to 11!”, “Why not just make 10 louder?”, “They go up to 11.” Lower your volume on stage. You want a great mix? Keep it low. Louder doesn’t make it better. Most touring bands on festival stages place their amps in the back (off stage) and mic them up. At that point they are going through monitors keeping the volume controlled. Now the audience can understand what the singer is saying, and what the instruments are doing.

Most bands are not trained sound-people. Especially a trained sound-person in a particular venue, who gets paid to be there. Even if you are an amazing sound-person in a band, the person who works at that venue knows the room, the sound it uses and what works best for that venue. Take a moment and work with them, not against them. They want you to have the best sound possible.

If you are not Man-o-war then you are probably trying to stay away from their loudest record; or maybe you do want to beat their world record for loudest band. In that case, make sure you have the judge around to take note of it. Work with those doing sound. They really do want you to come off amazing. They are dealing with a bunch of people in different bands, and you are dealing with one person. Work cohesively with them and I promise they will do their best!

Band Together • This is my girlfriend, I mean merch table, I mean she is in the band!;

Today’s Tip • Band Together • This is my girlfriend, I mean merch table, I mean she is in the band!;

Festivals, shows, even venues have a priority to keep the doors open. Let’s start with the purpose. Bands coming to perform say whatever they can to get as many people in for free. They are forgetting there is a reason a door charge exists. There are bills. Let’s forget about the bills and “how selfish” that sounds for an owner and more on to something important. What could be more important than bills?

A festival survives on income. Income allows a festival to carry on each year. Every person walking through that door helps that festival grow. Yes, over time more and more people will get “comps” (Free passes). At the beginning a festival is working hard to survive and grow. They start off small with little wiggle room, then open the doors for opportunity as time moves on.

Bands want free all the time for their Girlfriends, I mean well, whatever they are. Every dollar keeps that place open so people can perform. Remember, support venues, festivals, or shows. Those places want you to perform, respect that. However it seems few care about where and if they stay open. Places have life to them. For those that remember CBGB’s or L’Amour in Brooklyn you will agree with me the life a venue breathes with.

The stress of success – Suc-stressful : If I build it, they will… not show up?

Today’s Tip • The stress of success – Suc-stressful : If I build it, they will… not show up?

Booking an event, filming a movie, starting a band, or any other number of things where a person(s) comes up with a brilliant idea, to create something under the assumption that people will come because “it is indeed, brilliant”, needs to reevaluate everything. Speaking to a group of talented writers, I asked them each “Why should I hire you”. Well, most said they are were talented, awesome, good at what they do. One person said “I will make you money”, then following in formation, people added that reason to their personal reason too. Writers developing a script are not the ones making you the money. They are building you a “bi-product”. Money comes from something bigger than a “Bi-Product”.

Talking with comedians, musicians, and business, they all come up with the same plan; If I build it, people will show up. People will not show up, or buy anything you are selling, if they don’t know about you. About your “Brand”. Marketing your Brand is so important, that most companies spend a Third of their start up money in this area. Creating a voice, image, style, and then pushing it in the faces of millions of people. This is where the money is made; made through the company spending money on marketing. Like a writer, they have a script, a studio then gets it made, and finally markets it to earn income. Musicians create music, then a marketing company or label push that brand to generate sales.

A strong truth in this business is talent comes second. People must know who or what you are before they can believe in spending hard earned money on it. Give them an opportunity to grow a relationship with you. Branding is difficult if you ignore it. You can even start by making it simple then slowly develop it into something grander as you learn more about your “Brand”. At least you are starting somewhere. Which in most cases is a great place to be. So why are they “not showing up”? Because they have no connection to your brand, your image, your want to pay to be involved. Remember; Bring “Awareness” to people which creates “Interest” that in turn generates “Sales”. This is the secret to marketing!
